Urban Folding Bike, crazy fun in design

Most of the folding bikes on the market are engineer driven with very little focus on design, making them unattractive and obsolete. However, the latest collapsing bike by Chicago-based designer Ryan Mather has the proportions and aesthetics of a standard sized bike, which collapses to half its original size with minimal steps involved. Ideal for short city commutes, the urban folding bike can be taken anywhere and is easy to store and transport. A collapsing function makes it easier place into a car or store by the seat if riding a train or bus.

When fully collapsed, the two wheels are parallel, thanks to two hinges. One hinge is located near the stem of the handlebars allowing the frame to pivot. While the other hinge, located at the rear tire, allows the wheel to meet up parallel to the front. This hinging system enables the bike to be pushed around when fully collapsed. Other key features found on this bike are collapsing handlebars, pedals, and a seat post that also allows it to take up less space when not in use. Such a bike could definitely help decrease the percentage of commuters by car and increase the amount of users who ride a bike or use public transportation.

  1. This concept design reminds me of a bike now in production – the IF Mode folding bike.

Besides being a real bike someone can buy now, the IF Mode also folds smaller and takes @ 3 seconds to fold or unfold it.

This is an amazing idea. It looks like everyone really like the idea the current IF Mode does and everyone is trying to do the same.

Hopefully soon all the easy to travel with big wheel other bikes will be for sale because IF Mode is the only cool one that is not just an idea and I can buy or else I have to buy like a Montage, puma or dahnon that are not cool, just a lump of tubes.

Good to see all these forward thinking ideas. Hopefully more can make it to the masses.
